What is mylar & why is it so tricky to recycle?
Simply put, Mylar is a plastic nylon with a metallic coating. Any product that is mix of plastic and metal is a challenge to recycle.
Unfortunately, the City of Seattle does not accept Mylar material in your recycling bin. Most cities don’t. Although, most balloon shapes are made from Mylar, those that are entirely plastic cannot be recycled in your bin, either.
We are dedicated subscribers of TerraCycle and Ridwell; Two companies that ensure complex materials such as Mylar is properly recycled and kept out of our landfills, forests and waterways. ♥
Most of our balloon backdrops require us to pick up rented frames/covers/flowers, so at this time we will happily collect any unwanted Mylar balloon shapes for recycling.
If your balloon décor does not require any rented items, thus no reason for us to rendezvous with you again, upon request we provide a pre-paid shipping envelope for you to dispose of your Mylar/plastic balloon waste. Simply drop it in the mail and it will be sent back to us, for recycling. The rest of your decoration is made of material such as twine & latex that will safely break down in our local landfills, so in the bin it goes!
Another, great option is to donate your balloon decoration on your local “buy nothing” groups & apps. Here, at Float On Party Balloons, we truly believe that one can enjoy balloons while being environmentally responsible. :-)
